You chose books - I chose looks. We watched Matilda (1996) with the very funny Petey Gibson and we’ve loved this movie since we were old enough to xerox. Almost every kid feels like an outsider at some point in their lives - queer kids in particular. Matilda showed us it was ok to be a little different - but we’re still holding out for our powers. Maybe director Danny De Vito didnt intend for this movie to have so many queer themes, but we’re latching on to them all; chosen family, being surrounded by drag queens who hate children and going to extremes for vintage dolls. We still have anxiety about getting thrown in the chokey and we’re unashamed to say we got a little misty at more than a couple scenes. “You can do it Brucey!” Maybe we were just happy to watch someone eat so much cake.
